Since discontinuing Instant Ink and being required by HP to  return the partially used cartridges, I have had troubles printing.  I purchased authentic HP cartridges and installed them.  After a few printings, all I get are messages saying              "Error printing on HP Office Jet 8710".  There is no clue for what is causing the error message and failure to print.  I've removed the cartridges and re-installed them.  HP assigned a new identity to my one and only printer when setting up Instant Ink so they could track it for billing  purposes.  Of course, this printer id is no longer valid.  I removed the HP assigned printer from the list and now only have the original printer.  I am an untrained computer user (I know --the bane of all IT professionals), and all I know is what has ben picked up along the way.  I come from the era of  manual typewriters, progressed to the electric ones, and then got thrown into  the modern times.  Lol  Even though I am retired, there are things I need to print and it's driving me crazy.  Hopefully someone can help.  TIA

Hi @JjWc

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds frustrating to deal with printer issues after making changes with Instant Ink and having problems with the new HP cartridges. Let’s walk through a few steps to troubleshoot and hopefully resolve this issue with your HP OfficeJet 8710 printer.

1. Check Printer Status and Connection

First, ensure that the printer is properly connected to your computer or network.

  • Wi-Fi or USB: Verify that your printer is connected to the correct Wi-Fi network or via USB.
  • Printer on the Network: If you're printing wirelessly, check if the printer is showing up on your network.

2. Reset Printer

A reset may help clear out any leftover settings from Instant Ink and get the printer back to a fresh state.

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for 1-2 minutes, then plug it back in and power it on.

3. Reinstall Printer Drivers

Sometimes, when the printer was linked to the Instant Ink service, its configuration may have been altered. Reinstalling or updating the printer drivers may resolve the issue.

  • Uninstall the printer from your computer (remove it from the list of printers).
  • Go to the official HP website and download the latest drivers for the HP OfficeJet 8710: HP OfficeJet 8710 Drivers.
  • Reinstall the printer and reconnect it.

4. Check Cartridge Installation

  • Ensure that the cartridges are correctly installed: Open the printer's cartridge compartment and check if the ink cartridges are seated properly.
  • Check for protective tape: Make sure the protective plastic tape (if any) has been fully removed from the new cartridges before installation.

5. Update Printer Firmware

Sometimes, an outdated firmware can cause issues. You may want to check for firmware updates.

  • Go to the HP Smart App or printer settings to check for available firmware updates.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to update it.

6. Printer Error Messages

If the printer is showing error messages such as “Error printing,” this could be related to several things:

  • Clear Print Queue: Check your print queue and cancel any pending jobs that may be stuck. Sometimes, clearing the print queue helps reset the process.
  • Reset Printer Defaults: If your printer has any custom settings from Instant Ink or previous configurations, consider restoring it to factory defaults (usually found in the printer’s menu).

I hope this helps.
