We have barely had this printer for 3 months and we got an error message that both printheads are failing. I did the recommended HP stuff (open tank, take out printheads, put them back in, close tank, power off printer, unplug printer, wait 60 seconds, plug back in, etc.) and the error message is still there. WHAT ELSE DO I DO!?! This is so frustrating.

Hi @Tater3123,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I hear your frustration getting a printhead failure on a brand-new HP Smart Tank 7301 after only 3 months is definitely not what you expect. Let’s go through the steps to resolve this:

1. Power Reset

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Unplug it for 60 seconds.
  • Plug back in and power on.

2. Reseat Printheads

  • Open the ink access door.
  • Remove both printheads carefully.
  • Check for protective tape (should be removed).
  • Wipe contacts gently with a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water.
  • Let dry for 5 minutes.
  • Reinstall printheads firmly until they click.

3. Update Firmware

4. Run Printhead Cleaning

  • On printer: Settings > Printer Maintenance > Clean Printhead.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I have done the following to troubleshoot my printer purchased 10/9/2024 for $279.99 and have printed only 171 pages ($1.64 a page).

1. Power Reset

2. Reseat Printhead

3. Confirm Firm wear is up to date.

4. Clean printhead and ensure contacts are cleaned and undamaged.

5. Replaced Printhead

6. Performed Factory Reset.

Is there anything additional I can try? Since the warranty is expired, I am happy to take this thing apart and try to check connections, etc.
