Hello!
My parents and I have the same printer (Smart Tank 7602). My printer works fine, theirs all of a sudden comes up with an error:

There is a printhead problem.

No error code or any other information. I've already removed the printheads and cleaned them with rubbing alcohol. I did the same for the inside of the printer. Problem persists. Next I checked the paper in the printer. Problem persists. Attempted to run the clean printhead, and align printhead troubleshooting utilities. Both just spin, and do nothing. I tried printing something. Same thing. The printer is under warranty. Should we take it in for service? If so, what do we have to do? Any help at all would be greatly appreciated asap. Thank you.

Hi @ProfPieHunter,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I can imagine how frustrating it must be for your parents to see their HP Smart Tank 7602 suddenly stop working with a vague “There is a printhead problem” message and no error code to guide them. You’ve already done a great job trying the basics like cleaning the printheads and checking the paper path.

Steps for “Printhead Problem” on Smart Tank 7602
1. Reinstall the Printheads

  • Open the printer’s front access door.
  • Wait for the printhead carriage to stop moving.
  • Remove both the black and tri-color printheads.
  • Reinsert them firmly until they click into place.

2. Clean the Electrical Contacts

  • Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water (not alcohol).
  • Gently clean the gold contacts on the printheads and inside the carriage.
  • Let everything dry completely before reinserting.

3. Check Ink Levels

  • Make sure all ink tanks are above the minimum fill line.
  • Low ink can sometimes trigger printhead errors.

4. Update Firmware

  • Open the HP Smart app on your phone or PC.
  • Go to Printer Settings > Advanced Settings > Tools > Printer Updates.
  • Install any available firmware updates.

5. Reset the Printer

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Unplug it from the wall for 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and turn it on.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I spoke with HP Support's X account. It's a hardware error. We're in the process of receiving a replacement printer.

I will click "accept solution" once this whole thing is resolved. I have another question. In my HP account, I see a list of devices that I've registered in the past. How do I remove devices no longer owned? Thank you.
