Hello gorgeous people!

We purchased our HP Smart Tank 7605 in August 2024 from our local tech provider after our old printer / fax shut down. Even while installing the tech provider had problems - and ever since there were days we had to go without funktional print and communication service because the HP decided to just shut off. Last week we had to refill tanks - first time - did it all as shown in the videos. HOWEVER eversince its display is stuck in the buffering mode: "Tanks are being checked" ( In German: „Farbtanks werden überprüft“ )

We tried reinstall, updated the driver, checked if it works with another computer and mac ( due to our dental software demands windows 10..) but that was not the issue - the display is still stuck in the buffering loop.

We can print from the computer and scan things in, also receiving fax works but we can not access the display and send or copy anything that involves operating with the display. The tanks are shown full when accessing the settings in the HP App.

Our service provider has a strict 1-Year guarantee policy. We assumed that this is a device liability for defects issue but they are not being very supportive ( as 20 Year costomer.. not anymore obviously) So since we bought the printer from them and not HP we cant access the care service and the guarantee. We payed 500€ for a item that was defect and need help. Would appreciate any ideas on how to get the display back.

Hi @EmGrey

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

The display stuck on “Tanks are being checked” after a refill on your Smart Tank 7605 is likely caused by a firmware hang or sensor misread.

Since printing and scanning still work, the core functions are intact—let’s walk through a focused recovery to restore full display access.

Step-by-Step: Fix HP Smart Tank 7605 Display Stuck on “Tanks Are Being Checked”

1. Perform a Full Power Reset

  • Turn off the printer using the power button.
  • Unplug the power cord from both the printer and wall outlet.
  • Wait 2 full minutes.
  • Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors).
  • Power on the printer and observe the display.

This clears residual charge and resets internal sensors.

2. Check for Firmware Update via HP App

  • Open the HP App on your Windows 10 PC.
  • Select your printer > Printer Settings > Advanced Settings.
  • Navigate to Tools > Printer Updates.
  • If an update is available, install it.

Or use the direct support page:
HP Smart Tank 7605 Drivers and Firmware

Firmware updates often resolve display hangs and sensor loops.

3. Run Printhead Cleaning Cycle

  • In the HP App, go to Settings > Maintenance > Clean Printhead.
  • Run the cleaning process once.
  • Wait for the printer to complete the cycle and observe the display.

This forces the printer to recheck ink flow and may clear the stuck message.

4. Check Ink Tank Sensors

  • Open the ink tank access lid.
  • Confirm that all tank caps are tightly sealed.
  • Gently press each tank to ensure proper seating.
  • Close the lid and restart the printer.

Misaligned or unsealed tanks can trigger continuous verification loops.

5. Try USB-Only Operation

  • Disconnect the printer from Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
  • Connect it directly to your Windows 10 PC via USB.
  • Restart the printer and check if the display initializes normally.

This isolates the printer from network-based sync delays or remote commands.

6. Factory Reset via HP App (If Display Remains Unresponsive)

  • In the HP App, go to Advanced Settings > Printer Maintenance > Restore Factory Defaults.
  • Confirm and apply.

This resets internal logic and may restore full display functionality.

Let me know how the printer responds after the firmware update and power reset. If the display remains stuck, I can guide you through preparing a USB recovery or checking internal logs via the HP App.

You're doing everything right—this sequence should help bring the display back to life and restore full control.
