I have an HP Smart Tank 5100 and it will not print. I am using an Acer Chromebook. The Chromebook and the printer are on the same wifi and the Chromebook was updated to the latest version. I can't get the printer to do a firmware update. I tried to connect to the printer through USB and the printer is not listed in the dropdown menu. The power light kept flashing like it was processing a print job but nothing happened. Pressing the power button didn't turn it off. I don't know if the printer is defective or if there is something else I am missing.

@AWilson-TT, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding HP Smart Tank 5100 Printing Issue!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Here are some possible solutions to address the printing issue with your HP Smart Tank 5100 when using an Acer Chromebook:

Wi-Fi Connection: Make sure both the Chromebook and printer are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Restart the Wi-Fi router to ensure proper connectivity.

Power Light Blinking: If the power light is blinking, it might be indicating the printer is busy. Here are some steps you can try:

  • Ensure that the ink cartridge access door is closed completely.
  • Check for any error messages on the computer or printer display via the HP Smart app and follow the instructions to resolve the issue.

Reset the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer using the power button. If it does not turn off, disconnect the power cord from the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the source.
  • Wait for 60 seconds, then reconnect the power cord directly to a wall outlet and the printer.
  • Turn on the printer to complete the reset.

Firmware Update: Ensure your Chromebook is properly detecting the printer via Wi-Fi Direct or USB connection:

  • Try reconnecting the USB cable and ensure you have the correct driver installed. To update the firmware using a USB connection, ensure the USB driver is set up correctly.

Wi-Fi Direct Connection:

  • You can use Wi-Fi Direct to print from your Chromebook if regular Wi-Fi connection fails. Follow these steps:
    • On the printer, find the Wi-Fi Direct name and password. Access the touchscreen panel and navigate to the Wi-Fi Direct settings.
    • Connect your Chromebook to the printer’s Wi-Fi Direct network. On the Chromebook, select the printer’s Wi-Fi Direct name from the list.

HP Smart App: Use the HP Smart app to manage and troubleshoot your printer. Open it on your Chromebook, click on your printer to see any error details, or perform diagnostics.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
