HP OfficeJet 4658 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I'm enrolled in the HP Instant Ink program (stupid, of course, and if I ever get another printer I'll know better). What it means is that the ink cartridges I use on my Officejet 4658 are HP supplied and not counterfeit.

Over the past several weeks my printer has from time to time displayed the message “Remove and reinstall the indicated ink cartridge, making sure it is correctly installed.” It's nonsense, of course, because the message appears randomly when I've not touched the cartridges, so I assume it's a glitch in the software that some software engineer with the vision of a 14-year-old has 'updated'.

OK, so this morning I looked on the forum and found a 'solution', which involved a hard-reset. However, I now get a message which says “The indicated cartridges are not intended for use in this printer”. Again, it's nonsense: these are the cartridges that have been fitted for the past year, and which have (see above) been removed and reinstalled on several occasions over recent months.

Again I looked on the forum, and again followed the instructions to do a hard reset. But this time I get the same message on restarting. Does anyone know a solution to this problem (apart from throwing my machine through the window of HP's offices)?

@LanguedocFox, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

I completely understand how frustrating this situation must be, and I truly appreciate your patience while dealing with these unexpected cartridge errors. We certainly don’t want you to go through this kind of inconvenience, especially when using official HP Instant Ink cartridges.

Since a hard reset was mentioned, it’s possible that the printer is offline and not communicating with the Instant Ink server. I recommend setting up the device again by signing out and back into your account or performing a factory reset and reconfiguring the printer from scratch.
