HI @rapg9900,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
A "carriage jam" error on your printer, particularly if the carriage does not move to the center when you start the printer, often indicates a mechanical issue or obstruction within the printer. Here’s a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:
1. Turn Off and Unplug the Printer
- Turn off the printer using the power button.:
- Disconnect the power cord from the printer to ensure safety while inspecting and handling the internal components.
2. Inspect the Printer Internals
- Open the printer’s access doors or panel. For many printers, this is the area where you access the ink cartridges.
- Look inside for any paper scraps, foreign objects, or debris that might be blocking the carriage movement. Gently remove any obstructions you find.
- Ensure there are no obstacles in the carriage path. The carriage should be able to move freely from side to side.
3. Manually Move the Carriage
- Gently move the carriage to the center of the printer. Be careful not to apply too much force, as the carriage may be stuck due to a jam.
- If the carriage does not move or is difficult to move, there might be a mechanical obstruction or issue.
4. Check and Clean the Carriage Path
- Check the rods or belts that guide the carriage. Ensure they are clean and not obstructed by debris.
- Use a soft, lint-free cloth to clean any visible dust or ink residue in the carriage area.
5. Verify Cartridge Installation
- Carefully remove the ink cartridges from the carriage. Reinstall them, ensuring they are seated correctly. Misaligned or improperly installed cartridges can sometimes cause the carriage to jam.
- Ensure that the cartridges are not damaged or leaking, as this can also affect carriage movement.
6. Reset the Printer
- With the printer unplugged, wait for at least 60 seconds. Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
- Observe if any error messages or indicators are displayed on the printer’s control panel after powering it back on.
7. Check for Firmware Updates
- Go to the HP Support website and search for your printer model
- Check if there are any firmware updates available and follow the instructions to download and install them.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
