For those of you who are getting Supply System errors you might want to check the expiration date on the Ink Cartridge

This is some BS HP.  I got the Supply System error message and put in 3 different unused  / full black cartridges and each showed an error message - 2 had an October 2025 expiry date stamped on them (it's Oct 4,2025 today) and 1 was 02/2025.

I opened another pack that had a 12/2026 expiry date and no error message showed up.

As far as I am concerned HP owes me a ton of new Ink.  So HP does the cartridge just stop working at midnight on September 30, 2025?  This feels like forced obsolescence HP for full ink cartridges the day after the expiration date.

Feel free to send me a bunch of 962XL packs that expire in 2027 and beyond to replace the full ones I now have to trash...

@Golfgate, Welcome to the HP Support Community – it’s great to have you here!

I appreciate you taking the time to share your question. I'm more than happy to assist with this and provide a solution that works for you.

I understand how frustrating it must be to encounter a Supply System Error when using full, unused HP 962XL cartridges that are just past their expiration date. I’ll do my best to clarify the situation and help you move forward.

Why the Error Occurs

HP ink cartridges have built-in expiration dates to ensure optimal print quality and protect the printer’s ink delivery system. Over time, ink can degrade, potentially leading to clogging or damage to the printhead. As a result, some HP printers may stop recognizing cartridges once they reach their expiration date, even if they are unused and full.

Recommended Steps to Resolve the Issue

Verify Cartridge Expiration Date
Check the label on the cartridge or packaging. If the date has passed, the cartridge may be blocked by the printer firmware.

Try a Power Reset

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Unplug it from the wall for 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and restart.
  • Reinsert the cartridge and check if the error persists.

Clean Cartridge Contacts
Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water to clean the gold contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer. Let them dry before reinserting.

Check for Firmware Updates
Ensure your printer has the latest firmware via Official HP® Support. Sometimes updates improve cartridge recognition logic.

Additional Notes

Try disabling Cartridge Protection in printer settings:

  • Go to Setup > Preferences > Supply Settings > Cartridge Protection > Off
