Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

This problem seems to have been asked a bunch of times but I can't find a good answer. I ran out of ink and put in 2 new ink cartridges. Then saw a "There is a problem with the supply system", asking me to try new cartridges. I did and the problem persists. It only says to ask "HP Support".

I tried all the standard things (hard reset, new ink cartridges, cleaning the cartridge contacts). Nothing works. What else can I do?

Hi @buggaby ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are getting a "Supply System Problem" error on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 typically indicates an issue with the printer's ability to detect the installed ink cartridges. Since you've already tried the standard troubleshooting steps (hard reset, using new ink cartridges, and cleaning the cartridge contacts),

here are a few additional steps you can try:

1. Check for Firmware Updates Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Ensure that your printer has the latest firmware. Sometimes, updating the firmware can resolve errors related to cartridge recognition.
  • To update the firmware:
    1. Go to the HP Support website and search for your printer model.
    2. Download and install the latest firmware update following the instructions provided.

2. Inspect the Cartridge Area and Contacts

  • Even though you've cleaned the contacts, check again for any residual ink or debris that might be causing a poor connection.
  • Use a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water to gently clean the electrical contacts inside the printer where the cartridges sit. Ensure everything is dry before reinserting the cartridges.

3. Use Genuine HP Cartridges

  • Confirm that you are using genuine HP ink cartridges. Non-HP or refilled cartridges can sometimes cause recognition errors. If you're unsure, try using a set of genuine HP cartridges.

4. Reset the Printer to Factory Settings

  • Sometimes resetting the printer to its default factory settings can clear error messages related to cartridges. Note that this may erase some of your settings, so proceed with caution.
  • To reset your printer:
    1. From the printer control panel, open the Setup menu.
    2. Navigate to Printer Maintenance and select Restore.
    3. Choose Restore Factory Defaults and follow the prompts.

5. Check for Obstructions or Jammed Mechanisms

  • Open the printer and check for any obstructions or jammed paper around the cartridge area. Even a small piece of paper can cause issues.

6. Perform a Semi-Full Reset

  • A semi-full reset can restore the printer to a more fundamental state without deleting user data like Wi-Fi settings. Here’s how to perform it:
    1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer.
    2. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
    3. Wait 60 seconds.
    4. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet and the printer.
    5. Turn on the printer if it does not automatically power on.

7. Check the Cartridge Date

  • HP cartridges have expiration dates, and sometimes using expired cartridges can lead to errors. Check the date on your cartridges to ensure they are not past their expiration.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thank you for the time to respond. I did indicate clearly in the question that I tried all the regular things, even being specific about some of them that you listed. Not sure if you saw that or not. None of these worked, however.
