HP Officejet Pro 8600 e-All-in-One Printer - N911a

HI! Not tech savvy ;( and made have selected wrong option when trying to add another computer to the printer.  Not sure.

When I try to scan from the actual printer, I receive a pop up message that I have to enter a user name and password. Example:printtool is trying to modify the printer settings. Enter the name and password of a user in the print admin. group to allow this.

I don't have the  user name and password recorded.  Someone set this printer up for me many years ago.

Is there a may to retrieve the information?  Or can I cancel the task I may have inadvertently selected.

@Robin232, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your HP 8600 printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Looks like your HP 8600 has suddenly decided to play security guard! 🕵️‍♂️ No worries—I’ll help you get past the checkpoint.

The message you’re seeing means your printer is trying to make changes that require admin credentials, which were likely set up when the printer was first installed. Here’s what you can do:

Try Default Credentials (Just in Case)

  • If you never set up a username/password, try:
    • Username: admin
    • Password: (leave it blank) or try "admin"

Reset the Printer's Embedded Web Server (EWS) Password

  • On a computer connected to the same network as the printer:
    • Open a web browser and enter your printer’s IP address (you can find this on the printer’s control panel under Wireless Settings).
    • Go to Settings > Security > Administrator Settings and reset the password if possible.

Remove and Reinstall the Printer

  • If you suspect an accidental setting change, removing and re-adding the printer might help:
    • On Windows: Go to Control Panel > Devices & Printers, remove the printer, then reinstall it.
    • On Mac: Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners, remove and re-add the printer.

Restore Printer to Factory Settings (Last Resort)

  • If you can’t retrieve the credentials, resetting the printer might be necessary:
    • On the printer’s touchscreen: Go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Restore > Restore Factory Defaults.
    • This will erase all settings, so you’ll need to set up the printer again.

If you're still stuck, let me know what you've tried, and we’ll figure this out together! 😊

Take care, and have an amazing day!
