When I print a test page, it prints the color blocks but none of the wording. I have reset, recleaned the cartridge contacts, reinstalled cartridges. Now what should I try? I am not technical enough to take the printer apart?

I understand how frustrating it is when the printer prints color blocks but no text. It feels like something simple should work, yet it doesn’t. You’ve already done the right steps (reset, cleaned contacts, reinstalled cartridges), so let’s go deeper with troubleshooting:

Why This Happens

  • The black ink nozzle may be clogged, or the cartridge is failing.
  • Printhead alignment or calibration is off.
  • Printer firmware or driver issue.


Recommended Steps

1. Check Ink Levels

  • On the printer’s control panel or HP app, verify that black ink is not empty.


2. Clean Printhead Thoroughly

  • Use the printer’s built-in cleaning tool: 
    • Settings → Printer Maintenance → Clean Printhead.
  • Run Deep Cleaning if available.

3. Align Printhead

  • From the printer menu or HP app: 
    • Settings → Printer Maintenance → Align Printhead.


4. Update Printer Firmware
