Color Laserjet Pro 452dn

One week ago, black cartridge ran out: changed – OK. Today, printing a complex 206-page handout (duplex) with multicolored text; bar/line graphs, and pie charts. At mid-point, yellow cartridge ran out: changed – OK. Two-thirds of the way through, magenta cartridge ran out: change both the blue and magenta cartridge. Reprinted just the first two pages (duplex) to ensure all was well: only page 1 printed. Tried again, same thing. Tried again: printer whirred, clanked, “printing document” on screen, throbber flashing green but nothing printed and “printing document” message remains on screen until printer restarted. Cleared and tried again (and again): sometimes error 49 appears and sometimes not.

Ran HP Print and Scan Doctor: no issues. Printed test page: solid black. Tried to print Word text document: no issues. Tried to print same word text doc changing paragraphs to include black, blue, yellow, and magenta fonts: no issues. Tried to print stand-alone JPEG: stuck on “printing document” as above. Inserted the JPEG in the Word doc that previously printed OK: doc with image printed OK. Printed semi-complex HP system pages: diagnostics page, web-connect confirmation page: OK.

Error 49 may be associated with too complex of a task for printer but the printer printed 106 pages at first without an issue. It also printed the JPEG embedded in the Word doc – but not the stand-alone file.

So, it seems that the printer is mechanically sound, at least as far as the simple text and embedded JPEG image is concerned. But what happened after changing the last two cartridges to cause the issue with some files and not others?

As part of TS, I reinstalled the latest soft- and firmware: no change. Apart from the error 49 code (which only showed a couple of times early on but then no more), anyone have any ideas or experience with such an issue?

Thanks, Monk

I know it sounds weird, if not impossible, but anyone even have a wild guess?
