Hi @Beavertom

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for sharing the situation—I’m really sorry your printer isn’t powering on and is showing an error state. That’s incredibly frustrating, especially when you’ve already tried to get it going.

Let’s walk through a few focused steps to help bring it back to life.

Step-by-Step: Recover a Printer That Won’t Power On

1. Check Power Source and Cable

  • Unplug the printer from the wall and the printer end.
  • Wait 30 seconds.
  • Plug it directly into a wall outlet (not a surge protector or extension cord).
  • Make sure the power cable is firmly connected to both the printer and the outlet.

If the printer has an external power brick, check for any LED indicator on it.

2. Try a Different Wall Outlet

  • Move the printer to another room or outlet that you know works.
  • Avoid using power strips or UPS devices during this test.

3. Perform a Power Reset

  • With the printer unplugged, press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
  • Release the button, plug the printer back in, and try powering it on.

4. Check for Display or Light Activity

  • If the control panel lights up briefly or flashes, note any error codes or blinking patterns.
  • If the screen stays completely black, continue to the next step.

5. Inspect for Physical Damage or Burnt Smell

  • Gently check the power port and cable for signs of damage.
  • If you notice any unusual heat, smell, or discoloration, stop using the printer immediately.

If the Printer Powers On But Shows “Error State”

Once powered, if the printer shows an error on the display:

  1. Restart the printer and wait for it to initialize.
  2. If the error persists, print a Printer Status Report using the control panel buttons (usually by pressing the Information or Resume button).
  3. Open the HP App on your phone or PC and check for any error messages or update prompts.
