Currently in the market for a new printer. I have not decided if I will go for an inkjet, LED printer or laser printer.

HP seems to have more printer models than Starbucks has drink options, but some of them seem interesting. My biggest concern with choosing HP is the countless stories of people who choose to use third party ink / toner, and HP printers locking up and refusing to work even with the Cartridge Policy disabled.

I’m not looking to instigate a debate on the benefits of genuine vs third party consumables. Personally I buy genuine until they are no longer produced (usually 5 years after a printer is taken off the market?), and then switch to third party.

But my intent with this post is to gauge if this is actually common or if those lock-up stories are tied to specific models or a “used to be” thing.

Welcome to the HP Community --

At this writing, the ink policy is termed "Dynamic Security".

I've not heard of the policy being reversed outside of a few old printers (manufactured before December 2016).

What will five years change?

Unknown. HP does not share its future ink security policies with those of us outside of HP.

I suggest that you purchase a printer brand that meets your needs now.

True, based on Dynamic Security limitations, that printer might not be an HP product.

Should you decide to consider HP printers, check the details at the HP Store in your region.
