HP7900 Envy Inspire says in red: TRAY LOW.   Therefore HP Smart says that paper is low. However, paper is at max capacity in load tray.  Job will not print from Lenovo laptop. Any tips?

Hi @Early-Bird25,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I know how frustrating it is when your HP Envy Inspire 7900 printer says “TRAY LOW” in red, even though the paper tray is fully loaded. It’s like the printer is ignoring what’s right in front of it, and that can really throw off your workflow, especially when you're trying to print from your Lenovo laptop.

Let’s walk through the steps to resolve this issue.

Steps to Fix “TRAY LOW” or “Out of Paper” Error

Step 1: Check Paper Quality and Alignment

  • Remove the paper stack and inspect for:
    • Bent, wrinkled, or curled sheets
    • Dusty or damp paper
  • Tap the stack on a flat surface to align the edges.
  • Reload the paper into the tray and adjust the paper-width guides so they touch the edges of the paper snugly.

Step 2: Clean the Paper Feed Rollers

Dust or paper fibers can confuse the sensors.

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  2. Use a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water.
  3. Gently tilt the printer forward (~60°) to access the rollers.
  4. Press the cloth against the rollers and rotate them to clean thoroughly.
  5. Let it dry for 10 minutes before powering back on.

Step 3: Reset the Printer

  1. Disconnect the power cord from the printer and the wall.
  2. Wait 60 seconds.
  3. Plug it back in directly to a wall outlet (not a surge protector).
  4. Turn on the printer.

Step 4: Confirm Paper Settings

  • On your Lenovo laptop, open the HP app or printer software.
  • Make sure the paper size and type match what’s loaded in the tray.
  • Try printing a test page.
