My sister and I live together.  We purchase the same model wireless printer to use on the same network.  How do we differentiate one printer from the other?  Thank you for any assistance.

Hi @LanieM1203,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you want to differentiate between two identical wireless printers on the same network, you can use the following steps to assign unique names and IP addresses to each printer. This ensures that you and your sister can easily identify and select the correct printer.

Step 1: Connect Each Printer to the Network

  1. Power on the printers and connect them to your wireless network following the manufacturer's setup instructions.

Step 2: Access Printer Settings

  1. Open the web interface for each printer. To do this, you need to know the current IP address of each printer.
    • Find the IP address: You can usually find this by printing a network configuration page directly from the printer. This option is often available through the printer's control panel under settings or network settings.
    • Enter the IP address: Open a web browser and enter the IP address of the printer in the address bar (e.g., http://192.168.1.100).

Step 3: Assign Unique Names to Each Printer

  1. Log in to the printer's web interface using the default login credentials (consult the printer's manual if necessary).
  2. Navigate to the network settings or general settings section.
  3. Change the printer's name:
    • Look for a section like "Device Name," "Host Name," or "Bonjour Service Name."
    • Assign a unique name to each printer (e.g., "Sister's Printer" and "My Printer").
    • Save the changes.

Step 4: Assign Unique IP Addresses (Optional but Recommended)

  1. Navigate to the IP settings in the printer's web interface.
  2. Set a static IP address for each printer to avoid changes by the DHCP server:
    • Choose an IP address outside the DHCP range of your router to avoid conflicts (e.g., 192.168.1.101 and 192.168.1.102).
    • Save the changes and restart the printers if necessary.

Step 5: Update Printer Settings on Your Computers

  1. Remove the existing printer configurations on your computers if they were already set up.
  2. Add the printers back with their new names:
    • On Windows 10, go to Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
    • Click on Add a printer or scanner.
    • Select the correct printer by its new name.
    • Follow the prompts to complete the setup.

Step 6: Test Printing

  1. Print a test page from each computer to ensure that each computer correctly sends print jobs to the intended printer.

To assist better:

  • May I have the exact model name of the product? Refer to this document for steps to find the product details. Do not share any of your personal information such as serial, phone number, email ID, etc.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
