No recent changes to my connections.  The cartridge was working fine until a week ago.  Then, I started getting the error message that the ink isn't communicating with the printer.  I unwrapped and tried with 3 more HP ink cartridges but nothing has worked.  I've disconnected the printer, even uninstalled and reinstalled but nothing has helped.

Hi @pkc754,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your printer is showing an “ink isn’t communicating” message even with new HP cartridges. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Power Reset the Printer

Turn the printer on, unplug the power cable from the back, and wait 60 seconds.

Plug it back directly into a wall outlet and restart the printer. This refreshes the printer’s internal communication.

Reseat the Ink Cartridges

Remove the affected cartridge and reinstall it firmly until it clicks in place.

This helps the printer re-detect the cartridge correctly.

Clean the Cartridge and Printer Contacts

Use a dry lint-free cloth to gently wipe the copper-colored contacts on both the cartridge and inside the printhead carriage.

Dust or oxidation on the contacts can prevent the cartridge from communicating.

Reinitialize the Ink System

Remove all cartridges and close the lid so the printer displays “Missing Cartridges.”

Open the lid and reinstall the cartridges one by one to force the system to re-sync.

Check for Firmware Updates

Make sure the printer firmware is up to date.

Outdated firmware can sometimes block cartridge communication.

Try Another Genuine HP Cartridge (If Available)

If multiple cartridges show the same error, the issue is more likely inside the printer.

This helps confirm whether it’s a cartridge-specific problem or a system issue.

Inspect the Internal Printhead Area

Look inside the carriage for any debris, dried ink, or bent contacts.

Any obstruction can stop the printer from detecting the cartridge.

I hope this helps.
