Every time I copy or scan a paper, the printer will print vertical lines on half of the page. I have cleaned the printer via a youtube video, I have reset to factory settings, I have updated to recent firmware....at a loss as of what to do now. It prints from the computer just fine, only issue is scanning and copying black or white and color.

Hi @Carltoninc

Welcome to the HP support community.

I understand you're experiencing an issue with your HP device, and I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. I'm here to help you today.

If your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 is printing vertical lines when copying or scanning, but prints fine from a computer, it suggests an issue related to the scanner or the copying process. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:

1. Check for Dirty Scanning Glass:

  • Even if you've cleaned the printer, make sure to clean both the scanner glass and the white strip (the scan area) thoroughly. Use a soft, lint-free cloth and glass cleaner (or isopropyl alcohol).

2. Inspect the ADF (Automatic Document Feeder):

  • If you’re using the ADF to scan or copy, check for any obstructions or dirt in the feeder mechanism. Clean any rollers if needed.

3. Run Printer Maintenance:

  • Go to the printer settings and look for a maintenance option. Run the print head cleaning utility again to ensure no clogs are affecting the scan quality.

4. Check Scanner Settings:

  • Ensure that the resolution settings for scanning are appropriate. Higher resolutions can sometimes introduce artifacts if there’s an underlying issue.

5. Test with Different Document Types:

  • Try scanning or copying different types of documents (plain paper, glossy paper, etc.) to see if the issue persists across all formats.

6. Firmware Update Confirmation:

  • Ensure that you have the latest firmware installed. Sometimes, a reinstallation of the firmware can help resolve persistent issues.

7. Check for Hardware Issues:

  • If the problem continues, it may be related to the scanner hardware itself. Issues with the scanner assembly can cause lines and artifacts in scans.
