Hi @Garrettb38_-

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

That kind of phantom paper jam can be incredibly frustrating—especially when everything looks clear and the printer still refuses to cooperate.

I’m really sorry you’re dealing with this. Let’s walk through a few precise steps to help restore normal cartridge movement and get your printer back to work.

Step-by-Step Recovery for False Paper Jam Error

1. Perform a Full Power Reset

This clears temporary sensor errors that may be misreporting a jam.

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the back.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and power it on.

This simple reset often clears false jam messages.

2. Inspect the Carriage Path Thoroughly

Even tiny scraps or dried ink buildup can block cartridge movement.

  • Open the cartridge access door.
  • Use a flashlight to inspect both ends of the carriage track.
  • Gently try to slide the cartridge carriage left and right. If it resists, don’t force it—just note where it stops.
  • Remove any visible debris, packaging foam, or loose bits of paper.

3. Remove and Reinstall Cartridges

Improper seating can trigger jam errors.

  • With the printer off, open the access door.
  • Carefully remove each cartridge.
  • Inspect the cartridge area for obstructions or dried ink.
  • Reinsert the cartridges evenly and firmly.

4. Clean the Carriage Rail

Dust or ink buildup on the rail can interfere with smooth movement.

  • Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
  • Gently wipe the metal rail that the cartridge carriage slides on.
  • Let it dry fully before powering the printer back on.

5. Check for Gear or Sensor Misalignment

Some models have a paper feed gear or encoder strip that can shift out of place.

  • If accessible, inspect the clear plastic encoder strip behind the carriage.
  • Make sure it’s taut and clean—avoid touching it directly if possible.
  • If the strip is smudged, clean it gently with a dry cotton swab.

I know how disruptive this can be—especially when the printer is essential to your workflow. If you'd like help identifying your exact model or checking for firmware updates that address sensor calibration, I’d be glad to assist further.

Let’s get this sorted so you can print without interruptions.
