Hi @Murphy200108,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I understand how frustrating it feels when your print job keeps stopping and restarting, especially after changing the cartridge.

Let's try a few steps

If your printer stops 75% through a print job and restarts after changing the cartridge, follow these steps to resolve the issue:

Power Cycle the Printer:

  1. Turn off the printer using the power button.
  2. Unplug the power cord from the printer and the electrical outlet.
  3. Wait for 60 seconds.
  4. Plug the power cord back into the electrical outlet and reconnect it to the printer.
  5. Turn on the printer using the power button.
  6. Check Cartridge Installation:
  7. Open the cartridge access panel to ensure that the cartridge is properly installed.
  8. Remove the cartridge and reinsert it securely into the slot.
  9. Close the access panel tightly.
  10. Update Printer Firmware:
  11. Ensure that your printer's firmware is up to date.
  12. Visit the HP Support website to check for any available firmware updates for your printer.
  13. Follow the instructions provided on the website to update the firmware.
  14. Clear Print Queue:
  15. On your computer, go to the printer settings.
  16. Open the print queue and cancel all pending print jobs.
  17. Restart the computer and try printing the document again.
  18. Test Print Functionality:
  19. Load a plain sheet of paper into the input tray.
  20. Attempt to print a test page to check if the issue has been resolved.
  21. If the problem persists after performing the above steps, do keep us posted.

Take care

That gives exactly the same outcome. The document was 40 pages long, it had printed 30 then went back to start so finished up with 70 pages. Piece of absolute junk

Thanks for replying.

Elohi_NR is away for now; however, I'm Hawks_Eye, and I'll be happy to help you out!

Thank you for sharing the full situation—and I’m truly sorry the printer restarted mid-job and ended up printing nearly double the pages. That’s incredibly frustrating, especially when you’re working with long documents. I appreciate the steps you’ve already tried and your persistence in seeking a solution.

Let’s walk through a focused recovery path to prevent this from happening again.

Step-by-step recovery for interrupted print jobs after cartridge change

1. Avoid cartridge changes mid-job

  • If the printer prompts for a cartridge change during a print job, cancel the job first
  • Replace the cartridge, then restart the print job manually
  • This prevents the printer from reprocessing the entire document

2. Use the HP App to manage large print jobs

  • Open the HP App on your computer
  • Select your printer > Go to Print Settings
  • Enable “Continue printing after interruption” if available
  • This helps preserve job progress after a supply change

3. Print in smaller batches

  • For long documents, print in sets of 10–15 pages
  • This reduces the risk of interruption and makes recovery easier if needed

4. Update printer firmware manually

  • Visit the HP Software and Driver Downloads page
  • Enter your printer model and download the latest firmware update
  • Install it and restart the printer
  • Firmware updates often improve job handling and cartridge recognition

5. Clear and reset the print spooler

  • On your Windows PC:
    • Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter
    • Scroll to Print Spooler, right-click, and select Stop
    • Go to C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS and delete all files
    • Return to services.msc, right-click Print Spooler, and select Start

6. Reinstall the printer driver cleanly

  • Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners
  • Remove the printer
  • Restart your PC
  • Reinstall the printer using the HP App or the driver from HP’s support site

Let me know how the printer responds after these steps. If the issue persists, we can explore alternate print formats or spooler settings to ensure jobs resume correctly.

You’ve done everything right by staying observant—I’ll be here to guide you further.
