Hi @Frog4

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I’m sorry you’re running into this — it’s frustrating when the printer handles documents fine but refuses to print a photo, especially with fresh ink and no jams. You’ve already done well to confirm Wi‑Fi connectivity and that the paper is loaded.

Since the issue only appears with 5x7 photo printing, let’s focus on the conditions that can cause the printer to stay “busy” in that scenario.

Key areas to check

  • Paper type recognition: The printer may not be recognizing the 5x7 photo paper correctly. Some models require the paper size and type to be set manually in the print driver or on the printer’s control panel.
  • Tray settings: If the tray is reporting “low paper,” it may not be sensing the smaller photo sheets properly. Ensuring the guides are snug against the paper edges can help.
  • Driver mismatch: Printing documents uses the standard driver path, but photo printing often requires the photo/media driver settings. If Windows or the HP App is sending the job with mismatched paper size, the printer can hang.
  • Application settings: Sometimes the app you’re printing from (Photos, Word, browser) doesn’t pass the correct paper size to the printer. Testing from another app can confirm this.

Next step options

To narrow this down, could you share:

  • Which application you’re using to print the 5x7 photo (HP App, Windows Photos, Word, etc.)
  • Whether you’ve set the paper size to 5x7 in the print dialog before sending the job
  • If the printer’s control panel shows the tray loaded with 5x7 photo paper, or if it still thinks it has plain paper
  • Whether you’ve tried printing the same photo on plain A4/Letter paper to see if it completes

Here’s a guide that explains how to adjust paper type and size settings for photo printing:
HP Printers – Printing Photos (Windows)

Once I know which app you’re printing from and how the paper size is being set, I can give you precise steps to get the 5x7 photo to print successfully. Would you like to tell me which program you’re using to send the photo job?
