I purchased an HP smart tank 5103 this morning and have followed all of the set up instructions. After I completed there is an error saying no printheads detected. I don't know how to run and printhead clean. Nor did I think would would have to do this to a printer out of the box. Please advise.

Hi @JACKHAMMERJIMMI,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I totally get how frustrating it is to see a “No printheads detected” error right after unboxing your brand-new HP Smart Tank 5103. You shouldn’t have to troubleshoot something fresh out of the box, but let’s get this sorted quickly.

What This Error Means

The printer isn’t detecting the printhead assembly, which is the part that holds and delivers ink from the tanks to the paper. This can happen due to:

  • Improper seating of the printhead
  • Protective tape not removed
  • Dust or contact issues
  • Firmware glitch

Step-by-Step Fix

1. Power Cycle the Printer

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Unplug it from the wall.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and turn it on.

Sometimes this resets the internal sensors.

2. Reseat the Printhead

Even if you followed the setup instructions, it’s worth double-checking:

  1. Open the ink access door.
  2. Gently lift the printhead latch.
  3. Remove the printhead and inspect it:
    • Make sure all protective tape is removed.
    • Check for any dust or ink residue on the gold contacts.
  4. Reinsert the printhead firmly and close the latch.
  5. Close the access door and restart the printer.

3. Check for Firmware Updates

Sometimes a firmware update resolves detection issues: 👉 HP Smart Tank 5103 All-in-One Printer - Troubleshooting | HP® Support

Download and install any available updates using the HP Smart app or from your PC.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
