I cannot believe that your company would implement an update that prevents non HP cartridges to work.  You must change the firmware, or you will lose another long time customer.  I have important things to print on a short deadline and I can't print a thing!  If this is not corrected, I will NEVER again buy an HP product!

Hi @Merlin19th,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I'm sorry to hear about the frustration you're experiencing with your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw.

However, there are a few steps you can take to potentially resolve this issue.

Check for Firmware Downgrades

  • Some users have had success downgrading their printer's firmware to a version that does not block third-party cartridges. You can check the HP website or forums for older firmware versions and instructions on how to perform a downgrade.

Disable Firmware Updates

  • If you manage to downgrade your firmware, make sure to disable automatic updates to prevent the printer from re-updating to a newer version that might block your cartridges again.

Use HP Cartridges Temporarily

  • If your deadline is imminent and you cannot resolve the issue immediately, consider purchasing HP cartridges to get your printing done. This is not an ideal long-term solution but can help you meet your immediate needs.

Steps to Downgrade Firmware

If you decide to pursue a firmware downgrade, here are general steps you can follow.

Download Older Firmware:

  • Find and download an older firmware version from the HP website or a reliable source.

Prepare for Downgrade:

  • Ensure your printer is connected to your computer via USB or network.
  • Turn off automatic updates on your printer settings.

Install Older Firmware:

  • Run the firmware installer and follow the on-screen instructions to downgrade.

Test Non-HP Cartridges:

  • After downgrading, install your non-HP cartridges and see if the printer recognizes them.

Disable Future Updates:

  • Make sure to turn off automatic firmware updates to prevent the issue from recurring.

I hope these suggestions help you get back on track with your printing needs.

Take care and have a good day.
