@Foxgirl, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Let's get your HP OfficeJet Pro 8138e ready for cartridge installation! If the carriage isn't moving, it can be frustrating, but we can troubleshoot this step-by-step.

The carriage typically moves to the correct position for cartridge installation when:

  • The printer is turned on.
  • The cartridge access door is opened while the printer is idle or during a cartridge error prompt.

If the printer doesn't detect a need to change cartridges, it may lock the carriage in place.

Step-by-Step Guide to Expose the Carriage

  1. Turn ON the Printer
    • Ensure the printer is powered on.
  2. Open the Ink Cartridge Access Door
    • This is the large panel you lift on the front/top of the printer (not the scanner lid).
  3. Wait 5–10 Seconds
    • The carriage should move automatically to the center for access.
    • If it doesn't move, proceed to the next step.
  4. Perform a Soft Reset
    • With the printer ON, unplug the power cord from the back of the printer (not just from the wall).
    • Wait for 1–2 minutes.
    • Plug the power cord back in and turn the printer on if it doesn’t restart automatically.
    • Open the cartridge access door again and check if the carriage moves.
  5. Important Note
    • Do not manually force the carriage to move by hand, as this can damage the printer.

If the Carriage Still Won't Move

  • The printer might be stuck in an initialization/setup mode.
  • Possible causes include:
    • The printer thinks it needs to complete another task first (like setup or alignment).
    • Firmware issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
