@Vivian43, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

If your HP DeskJet 4100e All-In-One Series printer is not connecting to your Chromebook, you can try the following steps to resolve the issue:

Update Printer Firmware

Ensure that the printer firmware is up to date by downloading the latest version from HP's support website:

  1. Open a web browser on your computer and go to HP Software and Driver Downloads.
  2. Select "Printer."
  3. Enter your printer model (HP DeskJet 4100e) and click "Submit".
  4. Go to HP DeskJet 4100e All-in-One Printer Series Drivers.
  5. Expand the "Printer Firmware" section and click "Download".
  6. Save the file on your computer.
  7. Follow the instructions to update the firmware using the HP Printer Update utility.

Connect the Printer to Wi-Fi Direct

Use Wi-Fi Direct for a direct connection between your Chromebook and the printer:

  1. Print a printer information page to obtain the Wi-Fi Direct name and password by pressing the information button.
  2. On your Chromebook, click the wireless icon from the taskbar and select Wi-Fi.
  3. Select your printer (DIRECT-XX-HP DeskJet Plus 4100) and click "Connect."
  4. Enter the Wi-Fi Direct password from the Printer Information Page.

Reset Printer Connection

If updating the firmware does not resolve the issue, try resetting the Wi-Fi settings on your printer:

  1. Turn off and then turn on the printer.
  2. Press the Wi-Fi and Cancel buttons simultaneously for three seconds.
  3. Attempt to reconnect the printer to the router and the Chromebook.

Set up USB Connection

If Wi-Fi connection issues persist, consider setting up the printer using a USB connection:

  1. Remove all packaging, tape, and cardboard from the printer.
  2. Close the ink access door, plug in, and turn on the printer.
  3. Connect a USB cable between the printer and Chromebook.
  4. Follow the steps to load paper and insert ink cartridges.
  5. Install the required HP Smart software from HP Smart.
  6. Complete the printer setup in HP software to add your printer and begin printing.

I hope this helps.
