HP ENVY 6455e All-in-One Printer

Every so often my printer will get an E3, however there is no jam anywhere. The only fix I found was removing one of the ink cartridges, which makes me think that it is an ink issue. However, when I put in new ink, it will fix and print two print jobs, but then will come up with the error again. This is a waste of my ink, especially since it is the colored one that is mostly the problem. I don't want to waste money on an instant ink subscription if I can't even use the ink. Plus, they won't send me ink unless they can tell I am using the ink (which I can't because it causes the error!!)

@Winmen, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

The E3 error on the HP ENVY 6455e All-in-One Printer typically indicates that the carriage inside the printer has a jam. While it may seem like an ink cartridge issue, it is more closely related to the movement of the ink carriage or paper feed issues. Here are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the problem:

Check for Paper Jams:

  • Open the front cartridge access door and check for any paper stuck in the print path.
  • Ensure there is no paper debris or foreign objects behind the carriage or in the paper path.

Inspect the Carriage:

  • Turn off the printer and open the access door.
  • Manually move the carriage back and forth gently to see if it moves freely. If not, inspect for any obstructions.

Examine the Ink Cartridges:

  • Remove and reinsert the ink cartridges to ensure they are seated correctly.
  • Clean the electrical contacts on the cartridges with a lint-free cloth.

Update Printer Firmware:

  • Check for any firmware updates available for your printer. These updates can solve underlying software issues that might cause errors.

Reset the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer, unplug it, and wait for about 60 seconds before plugging it back in and turning it on.

Printer Alignment:

  • Run a printer alignment from the settings menu to ensure the cartridges are properly calibrated.
