@Richard5463, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.

The flashing envelope icon above the black ink icon typically indicates that the printer is trying to communicate a cartridge-related issue, such as:

  • Low or empty black ink cartridge
  • Incorrect or incompatible cartridge installed
  • Cartridge not seated properly
  • Counterfeit or refilled cartridge detected

Let’s walk through the steps to resolve this:

Check Ink Levels

  • On most HP printers, you can check ink levels via the printer control panel or HP Smart app.
  • If the black cartridge is low or empty, replace it with a genuine HP cartridge.

Re-seat the Cartridge

  • Open the cartridge access door.
  • Remove the black cartridge and gently clean the copper contacts with a lint-free cloth.
  • Reinsert it firmly until it clicks into place.

Check for Cartridge Compatibility

Update Printer Firmware

  • Sometimes, firmware updates resolve cartridge detection issues.
  • Visit: Official HP® Support
Enter your printer model and install the latest firmware.

Use Genuine HP Cartridges

Optional: Clean Cartridge Contacts

If the issue persists:

  • Power off the printer.
  • Remove the cartridge.
  • Clean the gold contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer with a soft cloth lightly dampened with distilled water.
  • Let it dry, then reinstall.

I hope the information shared has been useful and resolves your concern.

Wishing you a smooth and hassle-free experience ahead!
