@kinmundy, Welcome to the HP Support Community – it’s great to have you here!

I appreciate you taking the time to share your question. I'm more than happy to assist with this and provide a solution that works for you.

The error code 00879c98 typically indicates a general printer malfunction or communication issue. While this specific code isn't documented publicly, HP provides a powerful built-in tool to automatically diagnose and fix such errors.

Use HP’s Diagnose & Fix Tool (Windows/macOS)

This tool is part of the HP Smart app and can resolve most common printer issues including:

  • Print queue errors
  • Network connectivity problems
  • Driver issues
  • Port mismatches

Steps:

  1. Download and install the HP Smart app from 123.hp.com or your device’s app store.
  2. Open the app and sign in or create an HP account.
  3. Select your printer from the list.
  4. Go to Printers > Diagnose & Fix or scroll to Diagnostics and click Diagnose and Fix.
  5. Click Start and wait for the analysis to complete.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to resolve any detected issues.

Power Cycle the Printer

Sometimes a simple reset helps:

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and turn it on.

Check for Firmware Updates

Outdated firmware can cause unexpected errors:

I hope your issue is now resolved. If not, feel free to reply and we’ll continue helping until everything’s sorted!
