First step is to determine if this is a problem with hardware or drivers/software. Disconnect any usb or wired network connections from the printer and temporarily turn off wifi if applicable. Then power cycle the printer and see if it comes to ready. If it does you need to clear the print spooler on the computer, which will vary depending on operating system which you do not mention. Once cleared, reconnect the printer and check to ensure you have the current firmware installed. Check for current version at support.hp.com. If the printer does not come to ready when not connected then you have either a firmware or hardware issue with the printer. You may need to perform an NVRAM reset. Check You Tube for a video on how to do that.
