Hi @tony1578

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you’ve forgotten the username and password for your HP 6978 All-in-One printer, you can reset them or retrieve access using the following steps:

1. Resetting the Printer’s Network Settings

This will reset the printer’s settings to factory defaults, including the network settings, which may help if you're trying to connect it to your network again.

  • On the Printer:
    • Tap the Home button on the control panel.
    • Go to Setup (the gear icon).
    • Select Network.
    • Choose Restore Network Defaults and confirm.

2. Using the HP Smart App

If you had previously set up the printer with the HP Smart app, you may be able to retrieve or reset your credentials:

  • Open the HP Smart app on your device.
  • Check under Printers for any saved login information.

3. Accessing HP Smart via a Computer

If you have HP Smart installed on a computer:

  • Open the app and check if it automatically connects to your printer. This might allow you to change settings or find saved login credentials.

4. Default Username and Password

If your printer is set to factory defaults:

  • Many HP printers use "admin" as the default username and "admin" or no password (leave it blank). Try these if applicable.

5. Reset the Password for HP Account

If your printer is connected to an HP account (for Instant Ink, etc.) and you’ve forgotten the account credentials:

  • Go to the HP account login page and select “Forgot password?” to reset it.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
