Hi @BrianCourtright,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

The HP printer error 0x61000020 is a common printhead/carriage jam or internal hardware error seen on HP inkjet printers (including OfficeJet, Envy, and Smart Tank series). It usually means the printer detected a mechanical obstruction or a printhead alignment failure.

Here’s the troubleshooting process:

Step 1: Power Reset

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Unplug the power cord from the printer and the wall outlet.
  3. Wait 60 seconds.
  4. Plug the printer directly into a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors).
  5. Turn the printer back on.

Step 2: Check for Paper Jams or Obstructions

  • Open the printer access door.
  • Remove any jammed paper or debris.
  • Ensure the carriage moves freely from left to right.
  • If stuck, gently move it to the center.

Step 3: Reseat Ink Cartridges

  • Remove all cartridges.
  • Check for ink buildup or debris on contacts.
  • Wipe contacts with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
  • Reinstall cartridges firmly.

Step 4: Clean the Printhead

  • On the printer menu:
Setup → Printer Maintenance → Clean Printhead.
  • Perform Level 1 cleaning, repeat if needed.

Step 5: Update Firmware

Enter your printer model and install the latest firmware.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
