HP DeskJet 2722e All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

Greetings to the entire community.

I have a problem with my hp2722e printer, error E4.I have tried every possible solution I have found on the HP website and everything I have been able to read on the internet.

There is no paper jammed anywhere, I have literally taken the printer completely apart (no warranty).

I have tried connecting it via Wi-Fi, via USB, to restore the factory settings, but it has not been solved, the **bleep** orange light and the E4 error remain constant.

I would appreciate any suggestions because I would deeply dislike sending a printer that only produced 35 pages straight to the trash.

thanks in advance.

Hi @daywalker909,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I truly feel your frustration. It’s incredibly disheartening when a printer that’s barely been used starts showing a persistent E4 error, especially after you’ve done everything possible, even disassembling it. You’re not alone, and I’m here to help you through this.

Understanding the E4 Error on HP DeskJet 2722e

The E4 error typically indicates a paper jam, but as you’ve rightly pointed out, it can also be a false jam, especially when:

  • There’s no visible paper inside.
  • The printer has been moved or reset.
  • The internal sensors are misreading due to debris or mechanical misalignment.

Steps You Can Try (Even After Disassembly)

1. Reset the Printer (Soft Reset)

Sometimes a soft reset clears false errors:

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  2. Wait 60 seconds.
  3. Plug it directly into a wall outlet (not a surge protector).
  4. Turn it back on and wait for initialization.

2. Check the Paper Path Again

Even if you’ve disassembled it:

  • Use a flashlight to inspect the rear access door, input tray, and carriage path.
  • Look for tiny scraps of paper or dust near the rollers or sensor flags.

3. Clean the Paper Feed Rollers

  • Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
  • Gently clean the rollers inside the rear access area.
  • Let them dry for 10 minutes before powering on.

4. Try a Diagnostic Print via HP Smart App

  • Download the HP Smart App and run “Diagnose & Fix”.
  • It may bypass the E4 error and help reset the printer logic.

Thank you very much for your help.

I finally got it to work, how?

Because I barely used this printer, the ink had accumulated and was dry in the cartridges.

I simply use this printer for some quick copying of documents and for the scanning function, the hard work is done by an HP 107w laser.

I have taken it apart once again, carefully cleaning the deposits and dried ink stains in various places.

I have also carefully cleaned the paper sensors and motion sensors.

I reset the printer and voila..

I just replaced the ink cartridges with new original cartridges and everything is working correctly.

Thank you very much for your help.
