I have seen this error pop up online many times. so what IS the problem?

Ink Cartridge Cannot move...please clear obstructions (there are none)  and press OK etc.

dud this. no paper jam. moved cartridges back and forth manually, powered off and on, same message.. so is it the rubber thing to blame? I also rubbed alcohol on the connections and cleaned ink  cartridge entries.

Hi @ironmomma77,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you've already tried several troubleshooting steps for your HP Inkjet 8700 series printer. If you're still encountering the "Ink Cartridge Cannot Move" error message despite checking for obstructions and manually moving the cartridges, there are a few other things you can consider.

  • Power Cycle and Reset: Sometimes, a simple power cycle or reset can resolve issues with printer mechanics. Ensure you power off the printer completely, unplug it from the power source, wait for a few minutes, then plug it back in and power it on again.
  • Check for Foreign Objects: Even if you don't see any obvious obstructions, there could be tiny pieces of paper, dust, or debris that are not immediately visible. Use a flashlight to carefully inspect the inside of the printer, especially around the cartridge carriage path and underneath the cartridges.
  • Inspect the Carriage Mechanism: The issue could be related to a mechanical problem with the carriage itself. Ensure that the carriage moves freely when you gently push it. If it feels stuck or doesn't move smoothly, there could be a mechanical failure.
  • Sensor Issues: There might be a sensor that detects the position of the carriage or the cartridges. If this sensor is malfunctioning or blocked, it could cause the printer to display the error message. Check for any sensors near the cartridge carriage and ensure they are clean and unobstructed.
  • Firmware Update: Check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer model. Sometimes, updating the printer's firmware can resolve operational issues.

Regarding the "rubber thing" you mentioned, if you're referring to the rollers or other rubber components inside the printer, they could indeed be a factor if they are worn out or sticky. Cleaning them with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with water or isopropyl alcohol can sometimes improve their grip and functionality.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
