Hi @Lausian,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

The "Unable to print, check printer status" message on your HP OfficeJet Pro 9020 Series printer, along with the status indicating "Printer is Asleep," usually means that the printer is in a low-power sleep mode and is not responding to print commands. Here's how you can troubleshoot and resolve this issue:

Steps to Fix Printer Status "Asleep" Issue:

Wake the Printer:

  • Press the power button on the printer to wake it up.
  • If the printer does not respond, unplug the power cord from the back of the printer (while it is still on), wait for about 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.

Disable Sleep Mode:

  • Go to the printer's control panel and access Settings.
  • Look for Power Management or Eco Mode settings.
  • Adjust the sleep timer settings to a longer duration or disable sleep mode entirely if possible.

Check Printer Connection:

  • Ensure the printer is properly connected to your network or computer. If using Wi-Fi, confirm the printer is connected to the correct network.
  • Try reconnecting the printer to the network:
    • On the printer, go to Settings > Network Setup > Wireless Settings, and reconnect to your Wi-Fi network.

Restart Printer and Computer:

  • Restart both the printer and your computer to reset the connection.
  • After restarting, try sending a print job to see if the printer responds.

Update Printer Firmware:

  • Outdated firmware can cause communication issues. Ensure your printer’s firmware is up to date:
    • Go to the HP Support website and download the latest firmware for your printer model.
    • Follow the instructions provided to update the firmware.

Please find the remaining steps in the next post.

Hi @Lausian,,

Please find the remaining steps below.

Set Printer as Default and Clear Print Queue:

  • Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
  • Right-click on your HP OfficeJet Pro 9020 and select Set as default printer.
  • Right-click the printer again and choose See what’s printing.
  • Cancel any pending print jobs by right-clicking them and selecting Cancel.

Run HP Print and Scan Doctor:

  • Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool to automatically diagnose and fix printer issues.
  • Follow the prompts to troubleshoot and resolve any detected problems.

Check Printer Driver:

  • Make sure the correct printer driver is installed and up to date:
    • Go to Device Manager and expand Print queues.
    • Right-click on your printer and select Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
    • If issues persist, uninstall and reinstall the printer driver from the HP website.

Disable Advanced Printing Features:

  • Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
  • Right-click on your HP OfficeJet Pro 9020 and select Printer properties.
  • Go to the Advanced tab and uncheck Enable advanced printing features.

By following these steps, you should be able to resolve the "Printer is Asleep" status and restore your HP OfficeJet Pro 9020 Series printer to normal operation.

If the issue persists after trying these steps, there may be a more complex hardware or software issue that requires service. Contact HP Phone Support.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
