I couldn't print from my Windows 11 laptop. Whenever I try to print from the computer window or the app, it says "Error printing on HP Smart Tank 660-670 series. The printer couldn't print Simple PDF print" or " printer in error state. HP Smart Tank 660-670 series is in an error state"'

Please, what would I do?

Hi @stephbond,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP Smart Tank 660–670 series printer is showing “printer in error state” and won’t print from Windows 11. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Power Reset the Printer

Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord from both the printer and wall outlet.

Wait at least 60 seconds, then reconnect and power on to clear temporary faults.

Check Printer Status in Windows

Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners.

Make sure your HP Smart Tank is set as the default printer and shows “Ready.”

If it shows “Error” or “Offline,” remove it and re‑add the printer.

Update Printer Drivers

Download and install the latest full driver package or HP Smart app from HP’s support site.

Outdated or generic Windows drivers can cause “error state” messages.

Clear Print Queue

Open the printer queue and cancel all pending jobs.

Try printing a simple text file (like from Notepad) to confirm if the issue is with PDFs only.

Run Windows Troubleshooter

In Settings > Printers & Scanners, select your printer and click Run Troubleshooter.

This can automatically fix spooler or driver conflicts.

Check USB/Wi‑Fi Connection

If using Wi‑Fi, confirm the printer and laptop are on the same 2.4GHz network.

If using USB, unplug and reconnect the cable securely.

Update Firmware

Use the HP Smart app to check for firmware updates.

Updates often resolve “error state” issues and improve compatibility with Windows 11.

Test with a Diagnostic Page

Print a test page directly from the printer’s control panel.

If this works, the issue is with the computer‑to‑printer communication, not the printer hardware.

I hope this helps.
