I just bought an HP printer.  I totally regret it.  I can never speak to a person.  I have the printer hooked directly to my computer.  it will print once then won't print again until I unplug it and plug it back in.  I have to do this between every print job.  My printer also didn't come with any type of user manual so I can't see what the symbols mean and they are so hard to see with the dark gray background and black characters.  Worst investment ever.  it shouldn't be this hard to print something.  Have any of you had success in reaching a person ever?  If so how did you do it?

Welcome to the HP Community.

The User Guide is available for your printer.

You'll need to know what kind of printer model you purchased.

Finding your Product Name, Product Number, or Serial Number

Please never post the serial number or any private information here – we are a public resource.

if your printer lacks a lighted background on the printer panel, increase the lighting in the room or shine a light on the panel.  I realize you know this - we simply don't have anything to offer for changing the design of the printer.

What else?

The mystery printer may be connected to your network - or is disconnecting.

Assuming the printer was initially set up and the printer software has been installed...

In general, without any idea what kind of printer you have, the best option is to try the automated tool set to help find the problem and correct it.

Consider:

Offline Doctor V5.0.7

  http://ftp.hp.com/pub/printers/hppsdr/patches/HPPSdr.exe

  • Download and Save the doctor to your computer
  • Open File Explorer > Navigate to the folder in which you saved the file (likely Downloads)
  • Execute the doctor – Answer any prompts /  let the process complete
  • Restart the computer, log in, and wait for the final steps in the Doctor to finish.
  • Check for any difference.

Paraphrased

Connection Issues

  • Print and Scan Doctor Version 5.0.6 creates a secondary queue for printing with TCP/IP port.

After the Offline Doctor completes…

Verify / Adjust the “Default” printing device (Default Printer)

Settings > Devices > Printers and scanners

UNCHECK (clear box) Let Windows manage my default printer

Select (Left-Click) your printer from the list of printers > Manage > Set as Default

OR

Open Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers > Right-Click on printer > Set printer as Default

NOTES – Selecting Default Printer

  1. Do not select the printer marked as “Scan Only / DO NOT DELETE”
  2. Do not select the printer marked as “Fax”

Example Default Printer:  Set “Default” Printer = HP OfficeJet Pro 9020 series PCL-3 (Net)

ReferenceHP Printers - Printer is Offline (Windows) > Step 2: Manually set the default printer

The printer MIGHT include initial setup help from HP Support though assuming the printer is functional, it is usually faster to connect the printer on your own - wait times are long and much can be learned here in the Community.

Case submission is primarily directed at those whose devices are still in Warranty.

For the rest of us, this is not an option.

HP Support does not generally provide free service for out-of-warranty devices.
