i forgot my credintials for this printer and need to unlock it

Good Day. A warm welcome to the HP community. I reviewed the case regarding issues with not able to connect to the printer as the credentials are forgotten and the admin settings are locked. Superb description, brilliant troubleshooting and terrific observations made before posting. Kudos to you for that. 🙂

To assist you with accurate information I would require more information regarding this:

  • Did this happen after changing your router or ISP?
  • What is the operating system associated with the printer? Is it Windows or Mac?
  • What is the version of the Operating system used with the printer?

For now, try these steps:

  • Please restore network defaults on the printer first from this user guide:  refer to pages 139 and 140  for steps on how to do it.
  • Now check if unlocks and you are able to access the EWS page of the printer using a browser like Chrome, Firefox or Microsoft Edge.
  • Check for issue resolution. If it still does not get fixed, then I will send a private message to perform a semi-full reset on the printer to factory settings.
  • Please check your forum private message box for a private message from me to perform these steps.
  • After this please perform all the relevant steps from this link: (HP OfficeJet 8700 Printers - Wireless Printer Setup (Windows) if the OS is Windows.

If the OS is MAC then please perform all the prescribed steps from this link:  (HP Printers - Printing with Apple AirPrint (iOS))


This should fix the issue.


Please perform all these steps patiently as it is critical to resolving the issue. Going by your technical expertise and competence I am sure you will be able to perform these steps without breaking a sweat.
