My printer says that my ink is not properly installed. I put in new ink cartridges and it still says incorrectly installed. Why is it saying this?

Hi @Dreydog,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I know how frustrating it is when your HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 shows an "Ink System Failure" message even after installing new cartridges. You're doing everything right by trying to resolve it, and I’m here to guide you through the steps.

Step 1: Reset the Printer

This clears temporary errors.

  1. Turn off the printer using the Power button.
  2. Unplug the power cord from the printer and the wall.
  3. Wait 60 seconds.
  4. Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet (not a surge protector).
  5. Turn the printer back on.

Step 2: Check and Clean Cartridge Vents

Sometimes, glue residue or debris blocks the ink flow.

  1. Remove each cartridge.
  2. Inspect the vent area (small circular opening on top).
  3. Use a paperclip or pin to gently clear any blockage.
  4. Reinsert each cartridge firmly into its color-coded slot.

Step 3: Reseat the Printhead

If your printer has a removable printhead:

  1. Open the cartridge access door.
  2. Wait for the carriage to stop moving.
  3. Lift the latch on the carriage.
  4. Gently lift and reseat the printhead.
  5. Wiggle it slightly left and right, then lower the latch.

Repeat this step up to three times if the error persists.

Step 4: Use HP’s Virtual Assistant or Diagnostics

HP offers guided help and diagnostics tools.
