HP Officejet Pro 8620 e-All-in-One Printer

my officejet pro 8620 printer has Printer Failure message on its window, stating: "There is a problem with the printer or ink system. Turn printer off then on. If problem persists, contact HP." I have no ink system problem, all four cartridges are well installed and full. Turning off, unplugging the power cord, restarting, does not cure. Any help to proceed is greatly appreciated.

@ZavenG, Welcome to HP Support Community 😀,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

Check for Ink Cartridge Issues

  • Re-seat the cartridges: Open the printer, remove the color cartridges, and then carefully reinsert them. Make sure they're firmly seated in the slots.
  • Clean the contacts: If the printer continues to show the "counterfeit" message, it could be related to the contacts on the ink cartridges or the printer itself. Use a soft cloth or cotton swab to gently clean the gold-colored contacts on both the ink cartridges and the printer. Sometimes dust or residue can interfere with communication.

Check for Paper Jams

  • Paper Jams: Even though the error message doesn’t mention paper, it's a good idea to check for any potential paper jams inside the printer, especially around the cartridge area. Make sure the paper path is clear.

Reset the Printer

  • Perform a Hard Reset: Sometimes, a deeper reset can help.
    1. Turn off the printer.
    2. Unplug the power cable from both the printer and the electrical outlet.
    3. Wait for at least 60 seconds.
    4. Plug the power cable back into the printer and the electrical outlet.
    5. Turn the printer back on.

Check for Firmware Updates

  • Sometimes, outdated firmware can cause errors. Ensure your printer is up to date with the latest firmware.
  • Go to HP Support > search for your printer model > and check if there are any firmware updates available.

Reset the Ink System

  • Ink System Reset: If the printer is still showing the "printer failure" message, you can try resetting the ink system:
    1. Turn off the printer.
    2. Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer.
    3. Wait for 60 seconds.
    4. Plug the power cord back in and turn on the printer.

Run HP Diagnostics

  • HP Print and Scan Doctor: Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool from HP's website. It’s a great utility for diagnosing and fixing common printer issues.
