new ink cartridge not working

I have the most updated software on my MacBook and also the latest driver for my printer.  I replaced the black ink cartridge yesterday with a brand new one. expiration date 11/2020.  It is not working.  all quality reports have blank space where black ink should print.  will not print or copy in black.  This has happened before with a brand new cartridge.  Problem was solved by using a different brand new cartridge.  I would prefer to get this new cartridge replaced and not waste money throwing it out.  Its a 564 XL cartridge in Black.

@LSS2, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

 

Make sure the protective plastic tape from the black ink cartridge is removed before placing it in the printer.

Check the estimated ink levels to make sure the printer is reading the new black ink cartridge.

 

Clean the printhead

  1. On the printer control panel, touch the Settings icon .

  2. Touch Tools, and then touch Clean Cartridges.

  3. There are three cleaning levels. Complete all three if necessary. If the printhead is badly clogged, it might require another cleaning cycle. If so, wait 30 minutes before you perform all three levels of cleaning again.

Print a Print Quality Diagnostic report, and then evaluate the results.

  1. On the printer control panel, touch the Settings icon .

  2. Touch Tools, and then touch Print Quality Report.

  3. Check for black
