Product: HP DeskJet 2755 All-in-One Printer

When my black ink cartridge (HP) was low, I got a blinking E! and an empty cartridge icon.  I replaced the cartridge with a non-HP one and the issue persisted. I tried resetting the printer several times, cleaning the cartridge, and turning off the cartridge protection setting to no avail.  I then installed an HP branded cartridge and still got the same error;  the HP smart app shows "incompatible cartridge" with an empty cartridge icon.
