Hi @RonM13,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The printer failure 0x6100004a on your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer typically indicates a mechanical issue, such as a paper jam, carriage jam, or a problem with the ink system. Here are some steps you can follow to resolve the issue.

Restart the Printer

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer and unplug it from the wall outlet.
  3. Wait 2-3 minutes.
  4. Plug the power cord back into the wall and the printer.
  5. Turn the printer on and check if the error persists.

Check for Paper Jams

  1. Open the printer’s front cover and remove the ink cartridges.
  2. Carefully check the inside of the printer for any paper, bits of torn paper, or other obstructions.
  3. Check the paper path and rollers for debris.
  4. Open the rear access door or duplexer, and look for jams or obstructions.
  5. Remove any stuck paper carefully to avoid tearing it.
  6. Reinstall the duplexer or close the rear door.

Check the Carriage

  1. Open the printer cover to access the carriage area (where the ink cartridges sit).
  2. Ensure the carriage moves freely:
    • With the printer off, gently push the carriage left and right to ensure it isn’t stuck.
  3. Remove any obstructions blocking the carriage path.

Reset the Ink System

  1. Remove all ink cartridges from the printer.
  2. Inspect the cartridges for damage, leaks, or clogs.
  3. Wipe the electrical contacts on the cartridges and inside the printer with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
  4. Reinsert the cartridges and ensure they snap firmly into place.

Update Firmware

  1. Make sure the printer is connected to the internet.
  2. Download and install the latest firmware update for the printer from HP's support page.
  3. Follow on-screen instructions to complete the update.

Perform a Hard Reset

  1. With the printer on, disconnect the power cord from the back.
  2. Unplug the cord from the outlet and wait 60 seconds.
  3. Plug the cord back into the wall and the printer.
  4. Turn on the printer and check if the issue persists.

Perform a Factory Reset

If the above steps don’t resolve the issue:

  1. On the printer’s control panel, navigate to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Restore Factory Settings.
  2. Confirm the reset.
  3. Reconfigure your printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
