Example: hp envy 4520
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My envy 4520 Printer freezes:  the display, power button, and blue LED remains lit.  The printer cannot be shut down with the power button.  The touch display does not function.  After I disconnect the power cord and reconnect it, the printer boots up and operates perfectly.  My power cord directly connects to a single duplex wall socket that has no other device plugged in.

The printer is out of warranty.  Before purchasing another printer, I would like to know if there is something I could do.  The sleep mode settings of the printer are set for the maximum interval and the software has been upgraded to the latest version.  I am operating a windows 10 laptop that wirelessly connects to the printer.

Can anyone help?

Hi @GENERALP,

I'd like to help!

Reset the product

  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
  • Reconnect the power cord to the printer.
  • Turn the printer on. HP recommends plugging the printer directly into a wall outlet.

Also, try updating the printer's firmware - HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Sorry to say that your recommendations (thank you by the way) did not work.  The printer goes to sleep.  If the 4520 is left on overnight, for example, in the morning, it is asleep and I must disconnect and reconnect the power cord to reboot.  AFter that the 4520 works perfectly.

1.  I have always plugged the power cord of the 4520 into a separate socket.

2.  With the 4520 turned on, I have disconnected the power cord from the printer and waited for about 75 seconds before reconnecting it and turning the power on.

3.  I have verified that the firmware is the latest revision.

Unless there are further recommendations, it seems as though there is probably a hard, intermittent failure within the product.  Repairing it will cost as much as buying a new printer so it seems that I have no choice - I can tolerate the sleeping issue by disconnecting and reconnecting the power cord of the printer or simply buy another printer.

Over the years, I have purchased a few hp lazer jets that lasted far beyond the warranty period without failure.  I replaced them when they simply wore out!

The 4520 is my first experience with an hp inkjet printer.  When it works, it is a great product; however, I have spent too much time on the internet searching for solutions, diiscussing the problem with my PC manufacturer, and in frustration, reaching out to the hp instant ink folks.  My goal has been to determine if the 4520 required a repair or perhaps an esoteric software upgrade. I think the former is required.

Thanks for your effort.

Frank

The below suggestions to resolve the sleep issue-

Use HP Print and Scan Doctor to check connectivity

Download a special version of HP Print and Scan Doctor specifically created to help with printer offline conditions.

  1. Download HP Print and Scan Doctor.
  2. Run HPPSdr.exe from the download location on your computer.
  3. Once HP Print and Scan Doctor opens, click Start, and then select your printer.
    • If your printer in not in the list, turn it off and on, and then click Retry.
    • If there is a connection problem, follow the instructions in HP Print and Scan Doctor.
  4. If a screen prompts you to turn on printer updates, click Yes.
  5. If a screen prompts you to make your printer the default printer, click Yes.

Set a manual IP-

To set a manual IP and try the steps below -

--->Touch on the wifi icon ((i)) on the printer, and take down the IP address

--->Open a web browser (ex Chrome or Mozilla) and type in the printer's IP

--->then go to network ---> general ---> network protocols ---> select IPV4 only-->apply

--->go to wireless ---> wireless 802.11---> select manual ip ---> apply

--->Enter 8.8.8.8 for the first DNS and 8.8.4.4 for the second DNS.

--->then go to settings on the main ews page --> power management ---> select sleep mode to max 15min

Connect the printer to TCP/IP port- follow the below instructions-

--->Touch on the wifi icon ((i)) on the printer, and take down the IP address

a. Click Start/Devices and Printers.  Right-click on your HP Printer.  Select Printer Properties.  Select the Ports tab at the top.

b.    Select Add Port.  Select Standard TCP/IP Port.  Select New Port.

c.    Follow the Add Port Wizard.  Under Printer Name or IP Address, .  Example:  192.168.1.15.  The IP address will be copied under Port Name.

d.    Select Next and Finish the Wizard.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
