Hi @meggriff ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand your printer keeps giving me an error and won't shutdown. Not to worry I will help you to get a resolution to the issue.

Here are steps to resolve the issues with your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978:

Step 1: Reset the Printer

  1. Turn off the printer (if possible) using the Power button.
  2. Unplug the printer from the power source and any other connected devices.
  3. Wait at least 2–3 minutes.
  4. Plug the printer directly into a wall outlet (not a power strip) and turn it back on.

Step 2: Inspect the Cartridges

  1. Open the cartridge access door and check for any obstructions or debris.
  2. Remove all cartridges and inspect them for:
    • Damaged contacts (gold/copper contacts).
    • Leaks or physical damage.
  3. Use a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water to clean the contacts on the cartridges and the corresponding contacts inside the printer.
  4. Reinstall the cartridges securely in their slots.

Step 3: Check for Paper Jams Thoroughly

Even if the printer says there is no paper jam:

  1. Open all access areas (rear access door, duplexer, and input tray) and inspect for any small bits of paper or debris.
  2. Roll the printer rollers gently to ensure they move freely.

Step 4: Update the Printer Firmware

  1. If the printer can connect to your network, check for firmware updates:
    • Go to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Update the Printer.
  2. If the printer can't connect to the network, download the firmware from HP's support site and install it using a USB connection.

Step 5: Check the Cartridge Problem

  1. Confirm that you are using genuine HP cartridges.
  2. If the issue persists with one cartridge:
    • Remove it and try to operate the printer with the remaining cartridges.
    • Replace the problematic cartridge with a new one.

Step 6: Perform a Semi-Full Reset

A semi-full reset can clear error states:

  1. With the printer powered on, unplug it.
  2. Press and hold the Power and Cancel buttons while plugging the printer back in.
  3. Release the buttons when the printer powers on.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
