My HP5744 printer is stretching the size of my copies left to right but not top to bottom. The copy ends up being about 1/2" wider than the original.  In the copy settings the size is set to actual size. Why is this happening? I am using the flat bed, not the document feeder.  This only happens some of the time but it is very problematic.  I am copying original space plan drawings for my job, and the scale on the copied version needs to be accurate.

Hi @TKO8,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I completely understand how frustrating this must be, especially when you're working with precise architectural or space plan drawings where even a half-inch distortion can throw everything off. You're doing everything right by using the flatbed and setting the copy size to “Actual Size,” so let’s get to the bottom of this.

Why Is HP OfficeJet 5744 Stretching Copies Horizontally?

Possible Causes:

  • Scanner calibration drift or misalignment
  • Incorrect DPI or scaling settings are being applied inconsistently
  • Firmware or driver glitches
  • Paper size mismatch between the scan and print settings
  • Flatbed lid not fully closed, causing light leakage and distortion

Troubleshooting Steps

Here’s what HP recommends to resolve this issue:

1. Update Firmware and Drivers

Outdated firmware can cause scaling bugs.

2. Reset the Printer

A soft reset can clear temporary glitches.

  • With the printer on, unplug the power cord from the back
  • Wait 60 seconds
  • Plug it back in and turn the printer on

3. Check Copy Settings

Even if “Actual Size” is selected, double-check:

  • On the printer’s touchscreen, go to Copy > Settings
  • Ensure:
    • Resize is set to Actual Size
    • Paper Size matches the loaded paper (e.g., A4 or Letter)
    • Paper Type is correct (Plain, Photo, etc.)

4. Run Scanner Calibration

Misalignment in the scanner can cause distortion.

  • On the printer, go to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Align Printer
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to complete alignment

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
