HI @Nancy8882,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP printer is displaying an error message indicating that the "Scan Unit is Open" or there is an "Exit Jam," it typically means there's an issue with the scanner or paper path. Here’s a step-by-step guide to resolve this issue:

1. Check for Open Scan Unit

Inspect the Scanner Lid:

  • Open the Scanner Lid: Gently lift the scanner lid to check if there’s any obstruction or if it's not closed properly.
  • Close the Lid: Ensure that the scanner lid is fully closed. Sometimes, the printer might think the lid is open even if it’s slightly ajar.

Check for Obstructions:

  • Inside the Scanner: Look inside the scanner area for any paper or objects that might be blocking the scan unit.
  • Remove Any Objects: If you find anything, carefully remove it.

2. Check for Paper Jams

Inspect the Paper Path:

  • Open the Paper Tray: Check the paper tray and the area where paper exits the printer for any jammed paper.
  • Remove Jammed Paper: If you find any paper, gently pull it out. Make sure to remove all pieces, as small bits can cause further issues.

Access the Rear of the Printer:

  • Open the Rear Access Door: Depending on your printer model, you may need to open the rear access door to check for paper jams in the rear paper path.
  • Remove Any Paper: Carefully remove any jammed paper from this area.

3. Check and Clean the Scanner Rollers

Locate Scanner Rollers:

  • Open the Scanner Unit: If the scanner lid has a separate access panel, open it to access the rollers inside the scanner.

Clean the Rollers:

  • Use a Lint-Free Cloth: Dampen a lint-free cloth with water and gently wipe the rollers. Avoid using excessive moisture.
  • Allow to Dry: Let the rollers dry completely before closing the scanner lid and attempting to print again.

4. Reset the Printer

  1. Power Cycle the Printer:
    • Turn Off the Printer: Use the power button to turn off the printer.
    • Unplug the Printer: Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer and from the electrical outlet.
    • Wait: Leave the printer unplugged for about 1-2 minutes.
    • Plug In and Power On: Reconnect the power cord and turn the printer back on.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
