@kajlim, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The "Hold for Authentication" message on an HP printer usually means that the printer is waiting for the correct username and/or password to access the printer on the network. This is common in macOS environments or secured network printers that require authentication.

Here's how to resolve it:

If you're on macOS:

  1. Go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners.
  2. Select your HP printer from the list.
  3. Click "Options & Supplies" > "Utility" > "Open Printer Utility."
  4. If prompted for credentials, enter your Mac username and password (or the network printer credentials if known).
  5. If that doesn’t help, delete and re-add the printer:
  • Click the - to remove it.
  • Then click the + to add it back.
  • Choose “HP IP” or “HP JetDirect Socket” (not AirPrint), and make sure the correct driver is selected instead of a generic one.

If you're on Windows:

  1. Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
  2. Right-click on your HP printer > Printer Properties.
  3. Go to the Ports tab > Configure Port.
  4. Ensure "LPR Byte Counting Enabled" and "SNMP Status Enabled" are correctly set (based on your network settings).
  5. Also check under Security tab if your user account has print permissions.

If the printer is on a secure business/school network:

  • It may need your network login credentials.
  • Contact your network administrator or IT department to get the correct username/password or print queue setup.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
