I was just printing fine on my printer. I worked on my laptop on something for about 20 minutes and when I went to print, the Attention Light (!) was flashing and there was nothing on the display screen.  I opened up HP Smart on my computer and it says, "Check Your Account." I should add that this printer is NOT enrolled in HP Instaink, but I do have another one enrolled. When I had this one enrolled, there were repeated issues every time I installed an InstaInk cartridge and I didn't print anywhere near as much as I used to, so monetarily, it was more economical for me to just buy an HP cartridge when I needed one.

I recently had to update my payment method for the printer that is installed in the InstaInk program, but I did it before the original card expired and payment went through successfully when it was due.  I have never had any issues with HP printers prior to this one and I can tell you that it has turned me completely off the products.

I would appreciate any assistance you could provide. I did the unplug the printer, restart the router, uninstall and reinstall the printer on HP Smart, etc.  Luckily, I have another printer to use in the meantime, but I would love to get this one working successfully again.

Hi @Nonna2MKJ,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're dealing with a frustrating issue with your HP printer, especially since it was working fine just before this problem occurred. Here's a detailed approach to troubleshoot and hopefully resolve the "Attention Light Flashing" and "Check Your Account" issue:

1. Check Printer Status and Connections

  • Printer Display: Look at the printer's display panel for any error messages or codes. Sometimes, the display provides additional information about what might be wrong.
  • Check Connections: Ensure that all cables are securely connected. If your printer is wireless, ensure it is connected to the correct Wi-Fi network and that the network is functioning properly.

2. Verify Printer Account and Services

  • HP Smart App: Since you’re seeing a "Check Your Account" message, it’s worth checking the HP Smart app and logging in again to ensure your account is properly linked.
  • HP Account: Log into your HP account through a web browser and check for any notifications or issues related to your printer. Make sure the account details and payment information are up-to-date.
  • Ink Subscription: Even though you’re not enrolled in HP Instant Ink for this printer, sometimes issues with related accounts can affect printer functionality. Verify that there are no pending issues with any HP services or subscriptions.

3. Perform Printer Reset

  • Hard Reset: Unplug the printer from the power source and wait for at least 60 seconds. Plug it back in and turn it on. This can sometimes clear temporary issues or errors.
  • Factory Reset: If the hard reset doesn’t work, consult your printer’s manual or HP support website for instructions on performing a factory reset. This will restore the printer to its default settings, but you’ll need to set it up again.

4. Update or Reinstall Printer Drivers

  • HP Website: Visit the HP Support website and download the latest drivers and firmware updates for your printer model.
  • Reinstall Printer: Uninstall the printer from your computer’s settings and then reinstall it using the downloaded drivers or through the HP Smart app.

5. Check for Firmware Updates

  • Firmware Update: Sometimes, updating the printer’s firmware can resolve issues. Check the HP Support website for any available firmware updates for your model.

6. Verify Printer Settings

  • Printer Settings: Check the printer settings through the printer’s menu or HP Smart app. Make sure there are no unusual settings or configurations that might be causing the issue.

7. Clear Print Queue

  • Print Queue: Sometimes, stuck print jobs can cause issues. Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers > right-click your printer and select See what’s printing. Cancel any stuck print jobs.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thank you for all your help. Unfortunately, none of the listed steps worked.  I did numbers 1-3, and thought the Factory Reset was working, but then the Attention Light started blinking quickly and the wireless  button is slowly blinking. I did go to step 4 to update/reinstall printer drivers. I downloaded an update, then tried to reinstall the printer and now I am unable to get it to a state where it can be recognized by my laptop, so I am unable to install the printer again. It does not appear in the "Device Discovery" window. Since it's completely wireless, there is no way to hardwire it to my laptop to do an reinstall. I also downloaded a Firmware update, but again, I cannot update it with my printer since I cannot see the printer in "Device Discovery." I also took out the toner cartridge and reinstalled in just in case that was the issue, since that is what caused the Attention Light to blink after I cancelled my instaink subscription months ago.

I do not know what to do at this point.
