Help! "Encryption credentials have expired" error when trying to print wirelessly from Macbook Air to HP Envy Inspire 7255e. Both the laptop and printer are connected to the same in-home secure Wifi network. I've followed HP's troubleshooting instructions to create a new self-signed certificate in my embedded web server. I successfully completed a new certificate, then restarted my Macbook's printing system. I disconnected and reconnected my Mac and printer to the Wifi, and restarted them both. I am still getting the "encryption credentials have expired error" when trying to print. I tried to chat with an HP agent online to troubleshoot but it was very unhelpful. Successfully submitted new certificate
Current certificate
Error Message
Any tips are much appreciated! Frustrated.

Hi @Anna0711
Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.
Thank you for laying out the situation so clearly—and I truly regret the frustration this encryption error has caused, especially after you've taken all the right steps with the certificate renewal and wireless reconnection.
When the “Encryption Credentials Have Expired” message persists even after submitting a new self-signed certificate via the Embedded Web Server (EWS), it typically points to a mismatch between the printer’s security configuration and the macOS printing system’s trust settings.
Let’s walk through a structured recovery path to help resolve this and restore wireless printing from your MacBook Air.
Step-by-Step Fix for “Encryption Credentials Have Expired” on HP Envy Inspire 7255e
1. Remove and Reinstall the Printer on macOS
- Go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners
- Select your HP Envy Inspire 7255e and click Remove Printer
- Restart your Mac
- Reinstall the printer using the HP Smart app or AirPrint, ensuring it connects via the same secure Wi-Fi network
2. Clear macOS Certificate Cache
- Open Keychain Access from Spotlight
- Search for any certificates related to your printer’s IP address or hostname
- Delete any expired or untrusted certificates
- Restart your Mac to refresh the trust store
3. Use AirPrint Instead of HP Protocol
- When reinstalling the printer, choose AirPrint as the protocol instead of HP IPP or Secure IPP
- AirPrint uses macOS-native encryption and may bypass the expired credential issue
4. Regenerate Certificate with Longer Validity
- In the printer’s EWS:
- Go to Security > Certificates
- Create a new self-signed certificate with a longer expiration period (e.g., 5 years)
- Submit and apply the certificate
- Ensure the printer restarts and reconnects to Wi-Fi after applying the new certificate
5. Update Printer Firmware
- Visit the HP Envy Inspire 7255e firmware page
- Download and install the latest firmware via USB or HP Smart
- This may resolve persistent encryption credential errors tied to outdated security logic
Let me know how far you get, and I’ll guide you further if needed. You deserve a secure and seamless printing experience.
If my response helped, please mark it as an Accepted Solution! ✅ It helps others and spreads support. 💙 Also, tapping "Yes" on "Was this reply helpful?" makes a big difference! Thanks! 😊
