Hi @tnm028,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP printer might be encountering some issues, but pressing the "I" button triggers a test print. This could indicate a few potential problems.

  • Connection Issue: Check if your printer is properly connected to your computer or network. Ensure all cables are securely plugged in and that the printer is connected to the correct network, if it's a wireless printer.
  • Printer Driver: Make sure that the printer driver is correctly installed on your computer. You may need to reinstall or update the printer driver to resolve any software-related issues.
  • Printer Settings: Review the printer settings to ensure they are configured correctly. Check for any error messages on the printer's display panel that could indicate specific issues.
  • Hardware Problem: If the issue persists after checking the above steps, there might be a hardware problem with the printer.

Since pressing the "I" button triggers a test print, it's possible that there might be a setting or configuration related to this button that could be causing the issue. Refer to the printer's manual or documentation for information on the functionality of the "I" button and how it might be related to test printing or troubleshooting.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

The only response that answers this question can be found in this link below posted by MKazi (HP Retired) back in 2017. Although it is referencing model 3630. and surely HP would not be daft enough to have the same button on all printer with differing functionality.

The light is meant to be on (bizarre orange normally indicates error) and yes if it's depressed it will print a page of information about the printer, SW; HW build date etc.

So no all the response bouncing around the HP community  could be avoided by an easy to retrieve user manual online or printed in the user manual given with every printer.
